I have been spending more time recently developing new commercial music tracks. My concentration has been writing and recording folk acoustic guitar songs and various children's music tracks. This is where I have the most experience and I really enjoy the process. I usually start with a rhythm pattern and add acoustic guitar to build and flush out the arrangement. I add in bass guitar, an electric piano pad and then work out the lead melody. I have a wonderful Santa Cruz 1934 OM Grand that I usually use for my guitar work. I record it using a stereo pair of Neumann KM84's. This is done on a Mac with Logic Pro X.
It was great to get out a couple of weeks ago to capture a ton of different gun shot sound effects. My friend Karl had quite the arsenal! Except for battling with a few planes from the local airport it was a perfect morning. This sample below is a gun battle ambience using lots of the weapons we shot.
There's never a dull moment when out in the field recording new sounds. This past weekend I traveled up to Wallace, NC to record Gun Shot sound effects at my brother-in-law's farm. We were in the middle of a cow pasture. Later in the day we noticed one of the few bulls approaching and he wasn't too happy we were there. He particularly didn't like me and when he got within about 15 feet of me he put his head down to start the charge and I heard my brother in law yell, "Get to the truck Mark. Get to the truck!" Unfortunately, my recorder wasn't in record mode because it would have been a most amusing sound to capture and especially when I dropped my boom pole and at about 20 feet out I looked behind my to see my blimp rig dragging and bopping behind me. Fortunately, there wasn't any damage. At the time, it was not funny but later it was VERY funny! Having a 2000+ pound bull getting ready to run you over can sure get your attention. I didn't realize I could move quite as fast as I did! Sure wish I had hit record.
